Klimt's The Kiss: The Story Behind the Golden Masterpiece

Two figures wrapped in a shimmering embrace, enveloped in gold and pattern, kneeling at the edge of a flowering meadow. Gustav Klimt's The Kiss is one of the most romantic images in all of art, and more than a century after it was painted, it still takes people's breath away.

Who was Gustav Klimt?

Gustav Klimt (1862 to 1918) was an Austrian painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke away from traditional academic art to explore new ideas and styles. His work is known for its ornamental patterns, sensual figures, and lavish use of gold.

The Golden Phase

Some of Klimt's most celebrated works come from what's known as his "Golden Phase," when he began incorporating real gold leaf into his paintings. The effect is luminous, almost like a jewel or a mosaic, and it gives his paintings a glow unlike anything else.

The Kiss, painted in 1907 and 1908, is the crowning work of this period. Today it hangs at the Belvedere in Vienna, where it remains one of the city's most treasured artworks and draws visitors from around the world.
