What Is Public Domain Art? Why Masterpieces Belong to Everyone

Have you ever wondered how Van Gogh's Starry Night or Hokusai's Great Wave can appear on everything from posters to umbrellas to wallets? The answer is the public domain, one of the most generous ideas in the history of art.

What "public domain" means

When an artist creates a work, copyright law gives them, and later their heirs, exclusive rights to reproduce it for a period of time. When that period ends, the work enters the public domain. From then on, it belongs to everyone. Anyone can reproduce it, share it, study it, and build on it.

The length of copyright varies by country and has changed over time. In the United States, works first published nearly a century ago generally enter the public domain on a rolling basis each January. In many other countries, copyright typically lasts for the artist's lifetime plus 70 years.

Masterpieces that belong to all of us

Many of the most beloved artworks in history are now in the public domain, including the works of:

That's why you'll find their art in so many places. It's a shared cultural inheritance, free for every generation to enjoy.

What about living and more recent artists?

Many artists' work is still protected by copyright, and an artist's name and signature can also be protected as trademarks. Using that work properly requires a license from the artist, their estate, or their foundation.

At Monarque, we work with licensed partners to bring you collections from beloved artists including Frida Kahlo, Laurel Burch, Mary Engelbreit, Mary Lake-Thompson, and Norman Rockwell. Licensing ensures these artists and their legacies are respected and supported every time you choose one of their designs.

Why it matters when you shop

Whether a design is public domain or officially licensed, you can feel good knowing it was reproduced the right way. And whichever you choose, you're carrying a piece of art history: a masterpiece shared with the world, or a living legacy supported by your purchase.

Art for everyone

The public domain reflects a beautiful idea: that great art ultimately belongs to all of us. At Monarque, we love bringing those masterpieces off museum walls and into everyday life, where they can be seen, enjoyed, and carried every day.
